Jew wins “Arab Nobel Prize”
26 April 2009Now this is interesting. An American Jewish man, Ronald Levy, has become the first Jew win the King Faisal International Prize in Medicine, widely known as the “Arab Nobel Prize”. The dean of Stanford’s Medical School had asked Mr. Levy, a cancer researcher, for permission to submit his candidacy for the prize, but as an American Jew married to an Israeli, he didn’t think he had a shot. Interestingly, the Saudis treated him royally and were interested in what he thought of the country.
Saudi Arabia is widely thought to be the exporter of the most radical form of Islam to the world. Could this indicate that they’re changing? We’re not betting on it, but we’d like to hope that this is a step in the right direction!
