Dean made this comment at “a gathering of business leaders in Florida,” where, presumably, there were a few Jews present, so this likely was just political posturing, to show people that he’s not a leftist extremist, like he seemed to portray himself to be in the 2004 Democratic primaries.
Dean also said “We don’t need to spend 200 and 300 and $500 billion bringing democracy to Iraq to turn it over to people who believe that Israel doesn’t have a right to defend itself and who refuse to condemn Hezbollah.” We think it would be quite funny if Howard Dean led the charge to leave Iraq not because he thinks its the wrong war to be fighting, but because it’s rulers don’t believe that Israel has the right to defent herself.
As far as we’re concerned here at MEF, Iraq’s leaders’ opinions are inconsequential. Iraq is no longer a threat to Israel, but Iran and Syria are. It is heartening for Arab leaders condemn terrorism for a change, as was done recently by Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan, among other countries, but it’s definitely not a precondition for Israel to protect herself.

I am an Arab American with many jewish friends whom I love dearly. But is it not crazy that the once-oppressed have become the oppressors? I am speaking of the Zionist government of Israel and not its people. The Jews are referred to and often claim to be the chosen ones. But if Jews are above all other people, should they not stand for good and indeed act like they would be the one’s god has chosen? Why all the killing? Why the arrogant foreign policy? Why create enemies out of your neighbors? Zionism—never have I hated a word more. To me, it means wiping out everyone around you in the name of defending your existence. What about your neighbors’ right to defend themselves and their existence? I don’t get my news from American television, so I know the TRUTH. Your people have never known peace and will never know it as long as Israel continues to do what they do. What do Jews do for fun? I know they are absolutely absorbed with politics, war, power and influence. My goodness, try relaxing once in a while. Maybe it would help your situation.
