Israel-Hezbollah War 2006 - What Really Happened
5 December 2006This will come as no surprise to those who supported Israel in their quest to defeat Hezbollah (and their 10,000+ missiles) in 2006, but FINALLY the Israeli Defense Forces have fought back against accusations that they targetted civilians in the war. The IDF “declassified photographs, video images and prisoner interrogations to buttress its accusation that Hezbollah systematically fired from civilian neighborhoods in southern Lebanon and took cover in those areas to shield itself from attack.”
The Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center at the Center for Special Studies released it’s report on the war (via the New York Times), that includes quotes from Hezbollah fighters captured in the war, as well as videos and images taken by Israeli planes and soldiers.
Among the reports “hilights”:
- Hezbollah stored weapons in mosques, battled Israelis from inside empty schools, flew white flags while transporting missiles and launched rockets near United Nations monitoring posts.
- One Hezbollah fighter transported missiles, hidden in cloth, in and around the southern village of Aita al Shaab, carrying a white flag.
- Another Hezbollah member “explained how he had set up a rocket-firing position on the front porch of a house on the outskirts of Aita al Shaab.”
- Yet another Hezbollah member “said group members had worn civilian clothes, tried never to show their weapons, and traveled in ordinary civilian cars.”
Other video and picture indicate show:
- truck mounted missile launchers firing their missiles and then driving into a building before being destroyed.
- a missile launcher parked in a street between residential buildings firing rockets, before being destroyed.
It is great that this footage is being released now, to confirm what Israel supporters knew all along - that Hezbollah was operating from civilian areas and that Hezbollah bore the responsibility for civilian casualties resulting from Israeli destruction of the weapons used. Hopefully Israel will learn their lesson and release this footage and evidence when it matters - in the heat of the conflict. The release of this information comes after Hezbollah scored their public relations “victory” - dead Lebanese Muslims being shown in the main-stream media. The deaths of these individuals is truly regretted by the Israeli Army, but Hezbollah should be held fully responsible for the carnage resulting of their cynical use of civilians and civilian areas.
